SURPRISE! It's the Beginning of the End of the Semester

So I don't know about everyone else, but this week seems to have finally hit home that it's practically the end of the semester and almost half way through the year (let alone all of college *_*).

Anyway, here's a quick reminder that life isn't always as depressing as it seems, and there's some pretty awesome things in life.

Including this video, which was voted America's Cutest Cat by some random cable network I watched late at night when I went home for the weekend.

Enjoy!

America's Cutest Cat

CONGRATULATIONS KIRAN PRASAD

Congratulations to our Sophomore Spotlight winner for the month of November, Kiran Prasad!

Here is Kiran's Blurb:

“What on earth did you do here? If you can’t put the zipper on, you’ll end up in retail,”
Professor Nier tells me, as she hands me back my skirt. I take the garment back to my
desk and lift the presser foot of the sewing machine. Burrmm, burrmm, burrmm. The
needle pierces the cotton up and down, creating stitches as I slide the fabric through.
Outside, a slip of paper taped to the door reads “Sewing Techniques 1: 9:00 AM to 1:00
PM.”

At the Fashion Institute of Technology, where I spent my summer, every fashion design
major takes this introductory sewing course. It’s their version of Lit Hum. Our midterm
consisted of making a skirt, but our final grade rested on a completed blouse. Because
FIT is only ninety blocks downtown from Columbia, I would walk out of class each day
ready to pick up apples at Westside, head to Butler, or attend a club meeting at Lerner.
Instead, I would pass by discount fabric stores, the library that contains Vogue issues
from 1954, and the bookstore, which sells threads, tools to repair your machine, and
cloth.

Since I’ve been back at Columbia, whenever I pass by 27th street on the one train, I think
of the burrmming of sewing machines, the late nights I spent in the work room to finish
my homework, and the line of clothes I need to start designing.

Deathly Hallows NYC Premiere

Hey Class of 2013! So it may seem that CCSC'13 is a bit Potter-crazy but I assure you this tip is pretty cool.

On November 15, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will make its New York red carpet premiere at the Alice Tully Hall on Broadway and 65th St. (It's a part of Lincoln Center). The cast, including Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and would-be Columbian Emma Watson, will all be in attendance.

Best part is since it's happening only a few 1 train stops away, those lucky enough to get away from class early enough may catch a glimpse or even better an autograph/picture with their favorite cast member. The celebs are scheduled to walk the red carpet at 6PM, but I'd advise going early to get a prime spot in the fan section.

If you can make it out of class, then go and get an autograph for Maricela! ^_^

Hey! We're On Facebook

Hey guys! Guess who finally saw that little movie about that little website a bunch of crazy kids like to go on and realized that we wanted to do the same!

CCSC'13 has finally joined Facebook, so like our page and keep up-to-date with the latest goings on of your favorite council.

One important reminder highlighted on the CCSC'13 page: only 300 tickets left for Potterpalooza so get your FREE ticket now or no butterbeer for you!

PrezBo on Twitter

OK so, it's not actually President Bollinger's twitter, but it totally should be. @Lee_Bollinger tweets the (fake) inner musings of everyone's favorite University President. Here's a sample of the great stuff that everyone knows he probably thinks of every day:

September 21: Had to reschedule NYFed meeting b4 for gossip girl...obv

October 4: was talkin w/ lawyers about manhattanville stuff and "all i do is win" came up on shuffle - luv ya, itunes!

October 11: confession: I just picked the first amendment because I was too lazy 2 go tru the entire list.

If you're not on Twitter, it's stuff like this that make all those hashtags and at signs worth it. Other Twitter accounts worth checkin' out include:

@whitegrlproblem White Girl with White Girl Problems
"My Dad's raw food chef, my Dad's former best friend's daughter, and my Dad's new girlfriend are the same person."

@JimGaffigan Comedian Jim Gaffigan

"Happy Thanksgiving Canada. Hey when do you guys celebrate Christmas?"

@Broslife Barney Stinson

"A usual Saturday morning for me. Drinking coffee, cleaning my laser tag gun, and reminding everyone how awesome I am."

Potterpalooza Coming Faster than a Snitch on a Windy Day

Yup...That.Just.Happened.

Potterpalooza is almost upon us!!

If you haven't picked up a FREE ticket from the TIC yet, then pick it up today! No Owl is going to swoop in your window with a ticket in its beak.

Potterpalooza will feature Butterbeer and other delicious treats for sophomores courtesy of the Culinary Society. Yeah, that's right sophomores are the VIPs for this event, so take advantage of the VIP section that won't be available again until senior year when we can get free butter-less beer.

We all hope everyone will dress in their associated House colors so here's your guide:

Carman-Slytherin: Green and Black/Gray (or silver)
John Jay-Gryffindor: Red and Yellow (or gold)
The LLC-Ravenclaw: Blue and Brown/Gray (or bronze...but really, who has bronze clothing?)
Furnald-Hufflepuff: Yellow and Black (guess JK Rowling ran out of metallics...)

If you want to take it to the next level of HP Idolatry, participate in our HP Costume Contest also occurring during Potterpalooza. Think you can rock it Snape style? Have the crazy hair needed to pull off an accurate (albeit un-Emma Watson-like) Hermione Granger? Sign up for the Costume Contest by emailing us at cc2013-council@columbia.edu. The winner will receive a kickass HP-inspired prize (maybe a Tri-Wizard Tournament Cup...hmmm, you'll have to participate to find out!).

And, of course, Harry and the Potters will be performing! If you aren't familiar with Harry and the Potters and their songs, including Save Ginny Weasley and Voldemort Can't Stop The Rock!, here's just a taste of what you can expect for Saturday's event.

See you there!!

The Class of 2013 Wants You!

We know that the entire Class of 2013 is awesome, but wouldn't it be nice to be rewarded just for showing how awesome you really are?

CCSC'13 introduces Sophomore Spotlight! Starting this October, CCSC'13 will be rewarding one member of the Class of 2013 each month with a gift card of his or her choosing worth $50.

And what does it take to be in the spotlight? Let us know what makes you or someone you know noteworthy.

Did you teach English to young monks in Tibet?
Did you volunteer at your local animal shelter?
Did you perform with Jay-Z and Eminem at Yankee Stadium?
Did you survive Lit Hum without dropping out?

Nominate yourself or someone you know for this month's Sophomore Spotlight to begin the process towards getting that $50 plastic rectangle of joy.

Send a blurb about what makes you or someone you know gift card-worthy to cc2013-columbia@columbia.edu
